White electrocorundum (aluminum oxide): application and properties

The material complies with GOST 28818-90.

Electrocorundum (Aluminum oxide) is a refractory abrasive material, it is fine-grained, powdery. It consists mainly of aluminum oxide (Al2O3), in fact it is artificial corundum, the properties of an artificial abrasive are not inferior to natural ones. May contain small amounts of other impurities. It is produced by the method of electric arc melting of bauxite, into which a reducing agent is introduced.

White electrocorundum is a high grade abrasive material, grades 22A, 23A, 24A, 25A. Made from pure alumina. Among all types of electrocorundum, it has a lower concentration of foreign impurities and consists of at least 99% aluminum oxide (Al2O3).

White fused alumina refers to refractory materials. Possesses increased hardness and fire resistance, good cutting ability. Depending on the grain size, various types are industrially produced:

  • Micro grinding powder for extra fine surface treatment, production of grinding paste, grain size from F230 to F1200;
  • Grinding powder, grain size according to FEPA: from F220 to F100 (from 53 to 212 microns);
  • Grinding grain with grain size from F90 to F16 (from 150 to 2000 microns);
  • Spherical corundum, etc.

Using white fused alumina

Due to its high purity and uniformity of grains, electrocorundum is white, it is used in the processing of surfaces of various materials, in the foundry industry. It is one of the best abrasives for processing (polishing, grinding, cleaning) steels, including refractory ones, corrax stainless steel, leather, glass, wood.

Main areas of application:

  • production of abrasive paper, abrasive wheels, grinding and polishing pastes;
  • as a working abrasive material for sandblasting;
  • as a filler for ceramic products;
  • in foundry for the manufacture of casting molds, surfacing of non-stick coating of working surfaces of casting molds;
  • manufacturing of tools for processing hardened steels, finishing high-precision parts for watches, etc.

Due to the brittleness of the material, during the processing of white fused alumina surfaces, the grinding ability of the abrasive is restored by itself. The used parts are chipped off, new sharp edges appear under them. Electrocorundum can be reused for sandblasting. Abrasive tools do not lose their effectiveness as they are erased when grinding, sharpening metals.
